Inquiry

Dragon's Den

Explain the Invention Process

  1. Brainstorm some invention ideas
  2. Designed it
  3. Did a survey
  4. Changed it to what the target market said
  5. Make a prototype
  6. Work out the outgoing costs
  7. Worked out the retail and bulk price
  8. Worked out our projected profit
  9. How I am going to package it
  10. Present to Mrs K and Izzy

The most enjoyable part
The most enjoyable part was probably presenting it in front of Mrs K and Izzy because that was the least stressed part.
The hardest part was
The hardest part was working out all the outgoing costs because I couldn't remember all the numbers.
If I was to do this again I would
If I was to do this again I would make a more specific prototype because mine was just lego and cardboard. Plus I think my prototype is why I didn't get into the top three.
I have learned to
I have learned how to work out GST.
How did you feel talking to the dragons?
I felt really relaxed because I was rehearsed.
What was the most boring part?
The most boring part was working out all the outgoing costs because I didn't want to do it.
The most scariest moment
The most scariest moment was when Mrs K asked me a question that I hadn’t thought of because I didn't know what to say.
The most breathtaking moment
The most breathtaking moment was when I found out when Daniel got all of the dragons to go with his deal because he's my best freind.

Prams!

PRAMS!!!!!
This week we have been doing pram questionnaires. We used the answers so we can design our own prams. It was obvious that I had to have rubber wheels, also I need a 5.harness and a reclinable pram. And comfort & safety for the seat were very important.

Next we are going to make a pram & try virtually sell it.

Pangrams

Today we were learning about pangrams. A pangram is a sentence which includes all the letters in the English Alphabet. Here is mine.
Joe’s quiet wizards are very cool when they play with Zack but they fail when they play the magnificent xylophone.

Great job Adam

Paper Planes 22|10|14

This week, room 2 have been learning about paper planes. We have been making our own paper planes & have modyfied them to make them fly further. At the end of the week, we will be having a contest to find the plane that can fly the furthest. I made five different models. We had to come up with an assertion to make our planes fly further. My assertion was that the more slender the plane is the further it will fly. Our best plane flew 8.47 meters & our worst flew 1.4 meters. Below is my best plane.
Today, the 24|10|14 we made scatter plots about our planes. This is mine.
My assertion is that the more slender the wingspan the further it will fly.

My assertion was right but wrong at the same time because the plane with the most slender wingspan came second. But the plane with the second most slender wingspan came first..

Book Week Parade

Last Friday, our school went into the hall to showcase our outfits. We walked around the audience and hi-fived everybody. I was dressed up as Mr Stink from the David Walliams book. I wore my Dad's brown jacket, a black waistcoat over a white and blue shirt and black trousers. The jacket was tied together with a piece of string.

My reading

Andrew Hall

Yesterday, room 2 & 3 went to the Corban's Art Center. I made an aeroplane called the 787-8 Bodacious.

Yesterday I loved creating my aircraft because I found all these materials that is 'junk' & I made something out of it.

I found it tricky sticking the tail wings to the body because it kept falling off.

If I was to do this again, I would use the screws for the wings.

RAP punzel 29|8|14

Today the year 4-6's went into the hall to watch a playhouse company play called Rap Punzel. It was a parody of the Disney Rapunzel. At the start it was set in 'A LAND FAR FAR AWAY'S GOT TALENT with XFactor Idol' & Simon Cow, Rapunzel & Fresh Prince Rupee were the main characters. At the end of the show they did a parody of 'You can't touch this' by MC Hammer.
I really liked the show. I wish I could see it again.

Thrills - Reading - Prior Knowledge Monday 18th August

WALT: make connections

Who is Evel Knievel?
Evel Knievel
Evel Knievel is an American daredevil, a painter & an international icon. Evel Knievel was born on October 17 1938 in Montana, USA. Evel did most of his stunts on a motorcycle & before every stunt he spoke prayer not knowing if he'd live or die.

What is a thrill seeker
A thrill seeker is someone who enjoys thrilling situations.

I have never done a thrill seeking stunt.

Thrill seeking stunts are dangerous because if they fail it could be fatal. They could be fatal because if you did one you could fall from a great hight or something could fall on you.

The Haunted House

On a cloudy morning deep within a leafy forest lived a troublemaking teenager named Steve ready to prank anyone who walks in his house with a pain.tball gun. Steves mammoth mock of hair was like a sheriff hat & his velvet red skinny jeans stuck to his legs so bodaciously awesome that rabbits fainted in the sight of them. Steve had a broad chest with lots of muscle. Steve’s house was a beautiful house including three prodigious floors complemented with green walls. The roof of the house was covered with plantation

Wearable arts

Monday

9am

Today we are going to make a tuxedo representing fire with two foam boards coming up from the back.

2:30

But......... we changed it-see below.

Tuesday

Me in my Wearable art costume

This is my design so far.
Today I am trying:

  • To make & finish a t-shirt out of bubble wrap & CD's
  • Create some shoes out of egg cartons
  • Start some trousers if we have time

Wednesday

Yesterday we completed a t-shirt & two egg carton shoes.
We had difficulty getting the t-shirt on me.
We found out that if you get the little hot glue gun on your finger it feels nice.
Working in a group is great because we get everything done really quick.
I don't think my outfit reflects my element yet but we will do more stuff today.
The Torbay Learning Model helps us know what to do.

The Final Result

Overall I feel that our costume is awesome becasue we worked really hard on it.
The biggest success was the trousers.
My most enjoyable part was watching the spray painting.
The hardest part was putting the t-shirt on.
If I was to do this again I would do it by myself because Matthew takes over.
I have learnt how to handle a hot glue gun properly.
AWESOME HAT

My Holiday Recount

Mountain Biking Xperience

The car screeched to a stop just outside the Wairakei Resort which was where the start of the bodacious Huka Falls mountain bike track started. It was an early Saturday morning & it was really cold-I thought my nose would fall off! I had my lime green biking gloves on & my Dad standing broadly beside me hoisting the cumbersome bikes off the bike rack mounted on the back of the car had his red gloves on.

Finally when the bikes were off we started to ride. First there was a pretty small hill but then there was a flat part over the grass beside the road. But after we crossed the road there was a drenched gravel road going downhill with immensely sharp corners. Those corners required plenty of skill. After the gravel road we went into the forest. Leaves from the trees made up most of the track so that made biking a hassle because the tyres kept on slipping in the leaves.

When there was no more trees I made out that we were at the Huka Falls! Dad & I observed the falls for a while to let us catch our breath. Then we rode over the bridge & started cycling up a steep hill. That hill was so agonisingly steep that I had to get off & start pushing my bike. When I got to the top of the hill I realised that the trip was over! I was really delighted to know that we had finished but at the same time I wanted to do more.

I had a blisters on my feet so I went into the spa pool to soothe it. I had a really good time biking that day. I was sad it was over.

Squash

In squash my learning was about hitting the ball against the wall so the opposition couldn't get it.
I found out that the best way to hold the racket was with one hand.
I wondered if i would get the record.
The most difficult part was having a playoff with Riccato.
Now I know that it needs a lot of skill to play squash.
The most fun part was playing off Riccato.

Music With Mrs McHugh

Music With Mrs McHugh

In Music my learning was about percussion & timing. I found out that a triplet is three notes in one beat.
I wondered who is Incredibox made by.
The most difficult part was probably playing the glockenspiel.
Now I know that it is hard playing a glockenspiel is hard.
The most fun part was playing on Incredibox.

    Capacity 27|6|14

    Maths Capacity

    Kahu testing the water.
Today I was learning about capacity. Capacity can be in altitude, speed, length, depth etc. To learn about capacity, we had five containers, water & measuring cups. First, we estimated how much water each container held & ordered them in the order we thought they were. After that, we filled up the smallest container with water. We then found out how much mills it held. Then using the information from the cup we filled up with water, we measured the other containers. Finally we filled the rest up with water and found out how much water they could hold & see if we got in the right order.
I found out that capcity is the same as mass.

It was tricky putting the water into the containers.

I enjoyed finding how much water were in the containers.

When I had finished with the water, instead of putting it down the drain, I put in the butterfly garden

    My Report

    Torbay School

Torbay School is a Primary School situated in Aucklands North Shore overlooking Rangitoto. Catering years one to six.

At Torbay School there is lots of opportunities for the kids to get involved in such as Tech crew, Kapa Haka, Pasifika ICT gate group & much much more. There is also opportunities that give the kids special privileges like being a student leader which lets you be a PE shed monitor, go to Rainbows End at the end of the year & take part in special activities.

Now, you may be wondering if Torbay School has any play areas? Well they do! There is three different playgrounds, one for the juniors, one for the middle School & one for the seniors so each different group of kids get their own playground. There also is two fields, & two courts. The top field, is for rugby, & the bottom field is for football (soccer). There also is a discovery room, twenty one classes, a hall, a Library & a tuck shop. There is also a car track so you can bring your toy cars to school & let them go down the track!

At Torbay School there are lots of unique possessions such as house points, cross country & mufti days. Mufti days are days when you can go to School in your own clothes from home!

Torbay School is a great place for children to learn & is run by the fabulous Mrs Wendy Sandifer.

When we were doing this we were learning about reports. A report needs an introduction & a conclusion. A report also needs facts & cannot have a personal opinion in it.

    Tread Lightly

This week my learning has been sustainability and we have been going to the Tread Lightly Caravan. I found out that a kettle couldn't be activated by human muscles. I wondered how Arnold took up 4.7 Earths. The most difficult part was trying to activate the regular light bulb. Now I know that bees have lots of veins in their wings. My next steps are to start to plant a veggie/herb patch. I enjoyed doing the Environmental Footprint game which is a game where you have to answer questions and at the end it tells you how much Earths you would take up.
